COVID-19 has highlighted the barriers many people experience when trying to access medical treatment and advice, Dr. Shah, Chief Medical Officer at the American Wellness Platform Maven, stated that “The people that are not served well by our health system include those [with] limited means… darker skin and really, anybody with a uterus.”
We have highlighted three innovative digital platforms that aim to tackle these inequalities.
Telemedicine platform Spora Health describes itself as a “radically inclusive, virtual-first telemedicine provider focused on health equity and providing culturally competent care.”
Specifically designed for people of colour, it aims to make the lower life expectancy of Black Americans compared to their white counterparts a thing of the past.
A 2019 survey by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists concluded that women struggle more than men to access basic healthcare. Scotland has created a Women’s Health Plan - a range of 66 proposals and recommendations that hope to raise awareness and improve care for women by 2024.
Folx Health is designed to specifically address the needs of the queer and trans community. The digital healthcare service provides customised medical plans to those identifying as LGBTQIA+, helping them take control of their medical journeys. The platform provides various medications and procedures, including hormone replacement therapy packages, ED, PrEP, STI testing and erectile dysfunction treatments.
